Purpose

NEXUS Association for Architecture and Mathematics (NAAM)

The NAAM is a private association for the purposes of furthering knowledge of relationships between architecture and mathematics. This is done through the exchange of knowledge, the ability to pose queries to the mailing list, to learn who is working on what particular subject and what fellow members have published. Members of the NAAM may guest edit special issues of the Nexus Network Journal and moderate sessions at the Nexus conferences.

Members of the NAAM are part of a community of researchers in the relationships between architecture and mathematics. They are eligible to receive messages and announcements as part of a special mailing list. They receive a discount on conference participation fees, and a discount on subscriptions to the Nexus Network Journal. Members are allowed to post a short curriculum and selected bibliography of their publications on the NAAM website.

Aims

  • To favor the exchange of knowledge: through a restricted mailing list; through postings of member contact information, curricula and bibliographies on the website; through queries posted on the NNJ website;
  • To build a Nexus library of books and articles, both virtual and actual;
  • To support initiatives and events about architecture and mathematics: conferences; lectures; publications

The Nexus conferences began in 1996, with Nexus '96 held in Fucecchio (Florence) Italy. The second conference, Nexus '98, took place in Mantua, Italy. It was at the second conference that the decision was made to begin the Nexus Network Journal. The founding of the NNJ made possible communication and diffusion of research between the biennial Nexus conferences. Nexus 2000 took place in Ferrara, Italy. It was at this conference that the first Round Table Discussion was held, providing an important forum for interdisciplinary discussion. Nexus 2002 was held in Óbidos, Portugal. Co-directed by Kim Williams and José Francisco Rodrigues, it was the first Nexus conference held outside Italy. Nexus 2004, directed by Kim Williams and Francisco Delgado Cepeda, took place in Mexico City. Nexus returned to Italy with Nexus 2006 in Genoa, directed by Kim Williams, Orietta Pedemonte and Sylvie Duvernoy.

The Nexus 2008 conference will take place 23-25 June 2008 in San Diego, California, at Point Loma Nazarene University, directed by Kim Williams, Maria Zack, and Sylvie Duvernoy.

Founded in 1999, the Nexus Network Journal is an outgrowth of the international conference series entitled "Nexus: Relationships Between Architecture and Mathematics". The purpose of the NNJ is to publish research in architecture and mathematics that present the subject in the widest possible panorama. Thus, like the Nexus conferences, the NNJ is interdisciplinary and multicultural. Topics explored include proportion, geometry, algebra, topology, symbolism, fuzzy logic, complexity theory, fractals and chaos, tessellation, modularity, perspective, metrology, symmetry, music, astronomy, construction history and mechanics, and the application of these in architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning in all cultures and all epochs.
