The Nexus Network Journal is pleased to announce a Call for Papers
Ratio and Proportion in Architecture
Guest Editor:
Stephen R. Wassell
To commemorate the 450th anniversary of the publication of Silvio Belli’s treatise "On Ratio and Proportion", the Nexus Network Journal is dedicating a special issue to ratio and proportion in architecture. We hope to be able to present, through a collection of diverse research papers, a broad overview of the many facets of this fundamental concept. We welcome papers covering any cultures and any historical periods. We especially encourage a focus on contemporary architects and their works in which proportion has played a key role.
This Call for Papers can be downloaded here: NNJ_Call for Papers_Ratio-Proportion.
Deadline for submissions for review: 15 January 2022 15 February 2022
In 1573, the Vicentine engineer Silvio Belli, who like Palladio was one of the founding members of the Accademia Olimpica of Vicenza, published his treatise “On Ratio and Proportion”, an attempt to facilitate understanding of the mathematical notions that were being used in the Renaissance to underpin architectural design. By the 1500s, proportion theory was hardly new. Texts on the subject dated at least as far back as Plato, and designers of architecture in practically all cultures in all ages before the Renaissance used some basic ratios and proportions between dimensions to endow their building with a sense of order and harmony. Interest in proportion may have waned since the Renaissance, but even in the post-World War II reconstruction period, Modernist architects such as Le Corbusier were still weighing in on the topic.
Researchers are invited to submit articles covering these fields, taking into account the role of ratio and proportion in the conception, testing, definition and communication of architectural ideas and artifacts. Although we welcome papers covering different historical periods, we encourage a focus on contemporary practices where ratio and proportion – either conceptual, physical or virtual – is a key feature.
